Action C2 “THINNING INTERVENTION”
July 1, 2016 - July 31, 2016
In July 2016, Xanthi Forest Directorate in cooperation with the Department of Forestry and Management of Environment and Natural Resources, Democritus University of Thrace, completed the thinnings in the peri-urban forest of Xanthi according to the guidelines of the Action C2 “THINNING INTERVENTION” of the European FORESMIT LIFE14 CCM/IT/000905 Program.
Two different types of cultivation treatment – traditional and innovative thinning have been employed.
According to the traditional thinning method, light interventions have been employed. Particularly, dead, bud formed, suppressed or damaged trees (Pinus brutia) were removed and conifers over 5 meters height from the ground were pruned. At the same method, thinning and cultivated interventions have been employed in the understorey that covered by broadleaves.
The innovative silvicultural treatment includes more intense cuttings than traditional silvicultural treatment in the overstorey pines for the release of broadleaved trees (pruning were done over a height of 5 meters). Moreover, innovative thinnings of the understory, especially positive selection, have the aim to remove the competitors of the best broadleaved trees.
Finally, four notice boards have been placed. Particularly, three notice boards -one per demonstrative area- has been established describing the different silvicultural treatments and one notice board at the beginning of the intervention area, too, for giving information about the contractor, the action and the guidelines of Life Program.
